Van falls into ravine in Leyte, driver hurt – police

ORMOC CITY A wing van driver survived after his vehicle fell down a 250 meter ravine in Barangay San Vicente, Bontoc town, Southern Leyte on Monday morning.

Celso Gabato Jr., 29, however, sustained wounds on his right knee, said Police Lt. Juanesa Mendoza, chief of the Bontoc Police Station.

Police Staff Sergeant Rodolfo Vasquez, the case investigator, said Gabato tried to evade an oncoming dump truck when he lost control of the wing van.

Vasquez said the van was totally wrecked and the goods aboard were scattered all over the area.

The driver, who was stuck in his seat, was pulled out by local residents who immediately brought him to the Sogod District Hospital.

He was subsequently transferred to a hospital in Maasin City so he could be checked by an orthopedic specialist.

Gabato, according to Vasquez, is now stable at the Maasin Provincial Hospital in Maasin City.
