La Union’s capital city eyes ECQ for 2 weeks

LAOAG CITY—Health authorities are eyeing to place La Union’s capital city of San Fernando under enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) for two weeks beginning Oct. 1 after the Delta variant of COVID-19 was detected there.

The imposition of ECQ, the most restrictive containment classification in the country, would allow the city to contain the spread of the virus, the city government said Sunday.

Mayor Hermenegildo Gualberto confirmed the detection of the Delta variant case on Sept. 25.

He had instructed the city’s COVID-19 technical working group to prepare all logistical requirements for the heightened lockdown restriction, including the provision of relief goods and quarantine passes.

As of Sept. 25, the city had 1,063 active COVID-19 cases, according to city government data.
