MANILA, Philippines — Nine elderly nuns in a convent in Quezon City have died due to COVID-19, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines said Thursday.

The nuns of the Religious of the Virgin Mary (RVM) were all from the St. Joseph Home.

Citing information from the RVM Secretariat, the CBCP said the nuns were aged between 70 and 98 years old.

The first COVID-related death in the convent was on Sept. 13, while the latest was on Sept. 21.

The RVM compound has been on a lockdown since Sept. 15 after 62 nuns and 52 lay personnel tested positive for COVID-19.

Two of the 62 nuns were already fully recovered, 38 were experiencing mild/moderate symptoms, and 13 were severe cases, the RVM said.

As of Wednesday, 50 out of 52 lay personnel were on their way to full recovery.
