DATU ODIN SINSUAT, Maguindanao––Two suspected hired killers died after their target engaged them in a shootout Tuesday along the national highway in this town, police said.
Lt. Col. Rommel dela Vega, the town police chief, said Prof. Daud Kadon of Mindanao State University-Maguindanao was driving a Toyota Fortuner to Cotabato City when two armed men on a motorbike fired upon him around 5 p.m. Tuesday.
Although injured, Kadon returned fire, hitting both suspects. One was killed on the spot, while the other died later in a local hospital.
Dela Vega identified the slain attackers as Montano Usman of Talitay town, Maguindanao, and Abdul Mama of Barangay Tamontaka, Datu Odin Sinsuat town.
The police said relatives had claimed the remains of the slain suspects.
Dela Vega said they were still investigating the motive for the attack on Kadon.
