US Embassy closed today
THE United States Embassy in Manila and its affiliated offices is closed to the public today, Feb. 20, in observance of Presidents’ Day, an American holiday.
The Embassy and its affiliated offices will resume operations tomorrow, Feb. 21.
Until the mid-1970s, the Feb. 22 birthday of George Washington, hero of the Revolutionary War and first president of the United States, was a national holiday.
In addition, the Feb. 12 birthday of Abraham Lincoln, the president during the Civil War (1861-1865), was a holiday in most states.
In the 1970s, Congress pronounced the Presidents’ Day as a holiday to honor past US presidents. This is observed every third Monday of February.
