DAGUPAN CITY — Eight cases of the more contagious Delta variant of COVID-19 were recorded in this city, Mayor Brian Lim said Wednesday.

Lim cited a report from the Philippine Genome Center, which confirmed the infections based on sequencing of samples it received from the city.

According to the mayor, the eight patients had tested positive for COVID-19 on August 16.

Dr. Ophelia Rivera, the city’s COVID-19 focal person, said three of the Delta variant cases are medical frontliners, adding that their conditions were still being monitored because it has been almost a month since they were isolated in various facilities.

“Let’s remember that this genome sequencing comes out three to four weeks late, so these are our cases from August. So it should be the city’s policy to assume that the Delta variant is really spinning because that is the only reason for the increase in cases in recent weeks,” said Lim.

On Tuesday, the city recorded a total of 975 active COVID-19 cases.
