11 nabbed for illegal online ‘sabong,’ quarantine violations in Tarlac

MABALACAT CITY, Pampanga––The police arrested 11 persons engaged in illegal online cockfighting in a betting station in Bamban town, Tarlac province, disregarding the curfew and health protocols.

The Tarlac Provincial Police Office said in a statement Tuesday that they caught the suspects watching and betting in online cockfighting in Anupul village around 11:30 p.m. Monday in violation of the curfew under the province’s general community quarantine guidelines.

Some of them were not wearing face masks and disregarding physical distancing rules, and that the online betting station had no municipal government permit to operate, it said.

The police said they confiscated some P6,000 in bet money and a yellow pad paper with the list of bets from the suspects, who were brought to the Bamban police station for documentation and detention.

They are facing charges for violating the anti-illegal gambling law under Presidential Decree 1602 and Republic Act 9287 and the Mandatory Reporting of Notifiable Diseases and Health Events of Public Health Concern Act.
