Fire hits dive resort, houses in Oriental Mindoro town

CITY OF CALAPAN – A fire hit a dive resort and its neighboring houses in Puerto Galera town in Oriental Mindoro province on Sunday morning.

Senior Inspector Angel Lynn Salvador, ground commander and acting municipal fire marshal of Bureau of Fire Protection in Puerto Galera, in a phone interview, said the fire incident at Captain Greggs Restaurant and Dive Shop in Barangay (village) Sabang was reported to them around 4 a.m.

The fire was declared under control at 5:30 a.m. and out by 5:53 a.m.

Twelve other houses were burned but no one was injured.

Initial investigation revealed that damage on properties was estimated at half a million pesos.

“It helped that the barangay fire brigade and volunteers were active. The fire took place near the sea. While the fire truck (was) putting off the fire, a community bucket brigade from the sea simultaneously helped put out the fire,” said Salvador.

Investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of fire.
