MANILA, Philippines—At least 10,000 people have fled their homes due to Tropical Storm Jolina, the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC) said on Wednesday (Sept. 8).
In a report, the NDRRMC said 1,995 families—or 8,600 individuals—took shelter in evacuation sites as Jolina continued to bring heavy rains over some parts of Luzon and Visayas.
At least 548 families—2,376 individuals—who had also been displaced preferred to stay at relatives’ homes or elsewhere than the evacuation camps.
The NDRRMC said 2,753 families—12,213 individuals—were experiencing the effects of Jolina in the regions of Mimaropa, Bicol, Western Visayas and Eastern Visayas.
Twelve fishermen, who were earlier reported missing in Samar, have been rescued, said Defense Undersecretary Ricardo Jalad, NDRRMC chief, at a Laging Handa briefing.
Some areas lost power supply and got cut off from communications connection.
Jolina was last spotted over Manila Bay as of Wednesday afternoon.
