MANILA, Philippines — The country’s oldest appliance and electronics retail store, Automatic Centre, announced on Wednesday that it will shut down its retail operations starting October 10 due to “tremendous challenges” brought by the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We would like to announce today that Automatic Appliances Inc. (AAI) will officially close down its appliance retailing operations effective October 10, 2021,” said Automatic Centre president and chief executive officer Geoffrey Lim in a statement.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has caused tremendous challenges on our business and it is with much regret and trepidation that we share this news with you today,” he added.
Lim told partners that the company will uphold its obligations and that it plans to “work closely” with them to ensure a seamless transition and closure.
“To keep the brand’s legacy alive,” Lim said they are also seeking outside parties interested in using or adopting the Automatic Centre brand, after being one of the country’s most iconic appliance stores for more than 70 years.
Automatic Centre was started in 1948 by Benito Lim, who was known as the “appliance king” during his time. It currently has 20 stores.
