MANILA, Philippines — Ilocos Norte’s status has been reclassified to modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ) starting September 7 to 30 instead of general community quarantine (GCQ) with heightened restrictions initially announced, Malacañang said Tuesday.

“Ang Ilocos Norte po ay nasa MECQ mula September 7 hanggang 30. Ang naunang classification po ng Ilocos Norte ay GCQ with heightened restrictions,” presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said in a press briefing.

(Ilocos Norte is under MECQ from September 7 to 30. Its initial classification was GCQ with heightened restrictions.)

The province has been under MECQ, the second strictest classification, since August 16 to curb coronavirus transmission.

Its average weekly COVID-19 cases has dropped to 144 from August 27 to September 3 compared to the 210 cases recorded the previous week.

Ilocos Norte has 2,498 active COVID-19 cases as of September. 6.
