CHR urges probe of cyberattacks on rights groups

MANILA, Philippines — Amid the escalating cyberattacks on rights groups in the country, the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) called on the government to investigate such incidents and bring perpetrators to account.

A Swedish digital forensic foundation has traced the attacks on the website of rights group Karapatan since July 28 to a server company in Israel.

Jacqueline de Guia, CHR spokesperson, said such attacks “have become more common as these continue to target individuals and groups” like Karapatan, and alternative media outlets Bulatlat and Altermidya.

All three outlets were also the targets of cyberattacks between May to June from an IT infrastructure owned by the Department of Science and Technology and the Philippine Army.
