MABALACAT CITY, Pampanga––The town of Capas in Tarlac province has recorded its first case of the highly transmissible Delta variant of COVID-19, authorities disclosed on Thursday, Sept. 2.

In its advisory, the Capas municipal health office noted, however, that the Delta infection is not a local case.

The patient, a soldier assigned at a military camp in Sta. Lucia village, was found infected with the variant upon his return to Capas from Cavite province, it said.

The patient has been isolated in a military camp in Sta. Lucia, while the close contacts were being monitored by healthcare workers.

As of Sept. 1, the active COVID-19 cases in Capas stood at 179.

The local health office has recorded 1,934 COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began last year. Of these, 1,697 have recovered, while 58 have died.

Mayor Reynaldo Catacutan has encouraged village officials to set up temporary isolation facilities to accommodate villagers infected with COVID-19, as hospitals and quarantine facilities had run out of beds. INQ
