Sogod town in Cebu under MECQ 'with heightened restrictions' from Aug 29

CEBU CITY —  Another town in Cebu province has been placed under modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ) starting Sunday, August 29, in a bid to curb the spread of COVID-19.

Sogod Mayor Richard Streegan issued an executive order (EO) placing the town under “MECQ with heightened restrictions.”

“The municipality of Sogod still experienced a spike in active cases of COVID-19 and COVID-19 related mortality in this month of August,” portions of the EO read.

The municipality of Sogod, north Cebu joined 11 other towns and cities of Cebu province which were placed under the same quarantine category by Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia.

Under MECQ, several business establishments in Sogod were ordered closed including entertainment and recreational venues, outdoor and indoor sports venues, cockfighting arenas, outdoor and indoor tourist attractions among others.

Sogod is a fourth-class municipality located some 76 kilometers north of Cebu City. It is a town frequented by tourists because of its white sand beaches. It also has a total population of 39,447 residents.

Its numerous resorts are allowed to operate if they comply with the requirements set by the Department of Tourism. Its guests should also undergo swab tests.

Aside from Sogod town, the other areas in Cebu province that are under MECQ include Samboan, Sibonga, Argao, Cordova, Oslob, Liloan, Consolacion, Minglanilla, as well as the cities of Talisay, Carcar, and Naga.
