Mandaluyong lifts liquor ban

MANILA, Philippines — Mandaluyong City is now allowing the sale and delivery of alcoholic beverages, however the consumption of liquor in public places remains prohibited.

In an ordinance approved by Mandaluyong Mayor Carmelita Abalos and released by the Mandaluyong City Public Information Office on Friday, the city has suspended the liquor ban it imposed during the implementation of enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) over Metro Manila.

“Recognizing anew the economic hardship that the domestic liquor industry has experienced due to the reimposition of the ban and in accordance with the balancing of interest theory, the Sangguniang Panglusod hereby recognizes the need to suspend the reimposed liquor ban without compromising the city’s fight against the COVID-19 virus,” the ordinance read.

However, consumption of liquor must only be done within one’s own home where only family members may drink.

“No persons shall invite guests and visitors for drinking sessions inside their private residences,” the order read.

The city, however, may reimpose a liquor ban, upon the order of the mayor, “if the circumstances warrant or when national guidelines require,” the order further stated.
