Hoopers capture CUBA hoop title
THE Hoopers backed by the Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountants (PICPA) crushed CUBA-D, 72-63 last Saturday to rule the Cebu United Bankers Association (CUBA)-2011 Summer League basketball tournament at the Capitol Parish gym.
CUBA-D controlled the first two quarters behind the intimidating presence of bull-strong pointguard Melchor Malahay and Aldrich Baco.
However, the Hoopers struck hard in the third by unloading a 19-12 run for a 3-point lead, 55-52. Then in the fourth, Lito Ortiz, Andrew Tocao and skipper Yoli Meso conspired for a 17-11 rally to seal the 9-point victory.
Ortiz topped the Hoopers with 13 points while Tocao added 11. Melchor Malahay and Aldrich Baco paced CUBA-D with 14 and 12 points, respectively.
Meanwhile, in the battle for third place, Hendril Salis and Crezy Sumalo had 16 and 15 points, respectively to lift BPI to a 72-65 victory over CUBA-B.
Jess Miñoza and Raymund Jimenez led CUBA-B with 20 and 19 points, respectively.
