MANILA, Philippines — The voter registration hours on weekdays have been extended and voters could now register on Saturdays and holidays, the Commission on Election (Comelec) said on Wednesday.

Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez said the poll body’s en banc unanimously approved the changes.

“The en banc also unanimously approved the extension of voter registration hours, as well as the opening of voter registration on Saturdays and holidays, for the remainder of the voter registration period,” Jimenez told reporters in a Viber message.

In a later press briefing, Jimenez said the new developments will be implemented once promulgated.

“Exact details will follow when the actual resolution is promulgated,” Jimenez said. “This is basically an early report from the en banc.”

This development will apply to areas under general community quarantine (GCQ) and modified GCQ areas, according to Jimenez.

Voter registration is suspended in areas under enhanced community quarantine (ECQ). Metro Manila is under ECQ until Friday. Aug. 20.

The poll body’s en banc also ruled out the extension of voter registration period beyond September 30.
