OLONGAPO CITY–At least 42 new cases of COVID-19 were recorded in the city on Sunday (Aug. 15), raising its active infections to 341, local health data showed.

Among the latest to get infected are two 3-year-old toddlers from the villages of Barretto and Sta Rita.

The latest number of new cases was among the highest single-day records in the city in recent weeks. This pushed to 3,301 the total number of infections recorded in the city since last year.

But Mayor Rolen Paulino Jr. said the virus surge could not be immediately linked to the rising number of Delta variant cases in the city, which already reached nine on Monday.

Paulino said seven of the nine Delta variant cases were confirmed on Sunday but they were already healed from the disease.

The city’s number of recoveries also rose to 2, 781, including the 40 new recoveries on Sunday.

Data also showed that the city’s COVID-19 death toll still stood at 179 with no new deaths in the last two days.
