MANILA, Philippines — For the third consecutive day, the country registered more than 14,000 new cases of COVID-19, increasing active infections to 106,672 and the nationwide tally of confirmed cases to 1,755,846, the Department of Health (DOH) said Monday.
Aside from logging 14,610 new coronavirus cases, the health agency also reported the recovery of 10,674 patients as well as the death of 27 others. The country’s recovery count stood at 1,618,808 as of August 16, while the COVID-19 deaths reached 30,366.
According to DOH, the 14,610 new infections – the third-highest single-day tally after April 2 – is 23 percent of the 58,471 people tested for COVID-19 last Saturday, August 14. Generally, the health agency’s daily count of new cases is based on laboratory test results it received a day before.
The DOH said all laboratories were operational on Saturday, but seven labs were not able to submit their data to the COVID-19 Document Repository System.
It added that the seven non-reporting laboratories contribute 1.5 percent of samples tested and 1.6 percent of positive individuals, on average.
The country recorded its highest daily count on April 2 at 15,310 although this includes 3,790 case backlogs. On Sunday, August 15, the DOH reported 14,749 new COVID-19 infections.
Also on Sunday, the DOH revealed the detection of the first case of the COVID-19 Lambda variant in the Philippines.
To date, the country has detected one Lambda variant case, 807 Delta variant cases, 2,232 Alpha variant cases, and 2,483 Beta variant cases, according to the health agency.
The World Health Organization has so far declared the Alpha, Beta, Delta, and Gamma variants of the SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus that causes serious respiratory illness COVID-19, as variants of concern or VOCs.
Based on the latest data from the Johns Hopkins University COVID-19 tracker, COVID-19 has already infected 207,211,656 people and killed 4,362,285 across the world.
