MANILA, Philippines — The number of additional COVID-19 infections in the country is still seen to increase in the coming weeks despite the lockdowns being currently implemented in several areas, the Department of Health (DOH) said Monday.
Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said the effect of the lockdown can be seen only after two to three weeks.
“Sa ngayon, we are seeing that the cases are continuously increasing so if people are expecting that we will have lower cases or a reduction in cases because of what we have implemented as ECQ in certain areas in the country, hindi pa natin makikita ‘yung epekto ng ECQ na pinapatupad natin (we will not yet see the effect of the ECQ),” she said in an online media forum.

“Sa ngayon (For now), we are expecting that cases, most probably, will still increase in these coming weeks,” she added.
On Sunday, the DOH recorded 14,749 additional COVID-19 infections, driving the active case tally in the country to 102,748.
Metro Manila is currently under enhanced community quarantine until August 20.
