MANILA, Philippines — Local government units (LGUs) in Metro Manila have so far administered around 10.4 million COVID-19 vaccine doses, Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) chief Benhur Abalos said Monday.

Citing figures from the Department of Health, Abalos said 6.4 million first doses have been administered while some 4 million individuals have received the second dose.

According to Abalos, Metro Manila has a population of 14 million.

He said that several LGUs have already administered the first dose to “over 100 percent” of their population since they are also vaccinating non-resident workers in their cities.

“May iba tayong lugar na LGU kamukha ng San Juan, Mandaluyong at Pateros, sa first dose more than 100 percent na sila kasi…ang patakaran ng lahat ng LGU hindi lamang residente niya ang binabakunahan niya, pati yung mga nagtatrabaho sa lugar niya,” Abalos said in an interview on ABS-CBN’s Teleradyo.

(We have some LGUs like San Juan, Mandaluyong, and Pateros, which have administered the first dose to over 100 percent of their population because the policy of all LGUs is that they will also vaccinate residents and non-residents who work in their locality.)

“So in effect, you’re not only vaccinating your residents pati yung mga taga-ibang lugar (but also outsiders.),” he said.

Metro Manila is currently under enhanced community quarantine until August 20 amid the threat of  the more transmissible COVID-19 Delta variant.
