There’s no commitment to re-file the House bill seeking the creation of a lone congressional district for Mandaue City.
Rep. Gabriel Luis Quisumbing of Cebu’s 6th district said this in response to reports that he committed to refile the bill in Congress.
Mandaue City is under the 6th district along with Consolacion and Cordova towns.
Quisumbing said he will have to study the bill since it will affect Consolacion and Cordova, whose combined population doesn’t meet the minimum 200,000 requirement set by Congress.
Quisumbing said economic growth should be distributed in the sixth district.
“Mayor Jonas Cortes and I discussed some possible options. As I have always said, I am for Mandaue in becoming a lone district. I just want to make sure we follow the requirements set by the law. So far just some exploratory ideas,” Quisumbing said.
Mayor Cortes said he discussed his concerns with Quisumbing.
“The congressman asked that he discuss his concerns with the One Cebu party. Hopefully they will see the wisdom of our proposal,” he said.
Both Cortes and Quisumbing talked about the bill two weeks ago.
The mayor said he was thankful for the talks and declined to elaborate on his discussion with the congressman. Reporter Jucell Marie P. Cuyos
