165 more succumb to COVID-19; death toll nears 30K mark

MANILA, Philippines — Some 165 more COVID-19 patients have died, the Department of Health (DOH) said Thursday, as the government also keeps watch of increasing numbers of additional coronavirus cases.

The DOH said there are now a total of 29,539 patients who have succumbed to COVID-19, comprising 1.74 percent of all the 1.7 million confirmed cases in the country.

Based on previous case bulletins, the health department has so far reported a sum of 1,651 fatalities in August, on an average of 137 deaths being added to the tally per day.

But in terms of the actual date of deaths, the DOH said the number of patients dying from the disease is declining until July. According to DOH, an average of 133 patients died per day in April this year when the country saw a surge in cases. This later decreased to 117 fatalities daily in May, 95 in June, and 61 in July.

Meanwhile, the DOH also reported that out of the total cases, 87,663 remain active, of which 1.5 percent are severe and 0.9 percent are critical that are at higher risk for death.

According to DOH data, the majority or 95.3 percent are mild, while 1.2 percent are asymptomatic and 1.08 are moderate cases.
