Magnitude 7.1 quake strikes near Mati in Davao Oriental

MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude 7.1 quake struck northeast of Mati in Davao Oriental at 1:46 a.m. on Thursday, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

There was no tsunami threat to the Philippines, Phivolcs said.

The quake was of tectonic origin and had a depth of focus of 69 km.

The quake was felt at the following reported intensities:

Intensity V – General Santos City and Alabel in South Cotabato; General Generoso, Lupon, Baganga  and Mati City in Davao Oriental; the cities of Tagum and Panabo and the towns of Carmen and Nabunturan in Davao del Norte and  Malungon in Sarangani province.

Intensity IV – Koronadal City; Tampakan in South Cotabato; Davao City; Kiblawan town of Davao del Sur;  Koronadal City and the towns of Tampakan, Tupi, and Polomolok in South Cotabato; Glan, Malapatan, and Kiamba in Sarangani  and Monkayo in Davao de Oro

           Intensity III – Kabacan, Cotabato; Bayugan, Agusan del Sur

Intensity II –  Cagayan de Oro City; Maasim, Sarangani; Arakan and Banisilan in Cotabato

 Intensity I   – Mambajao, Camiguin Island.

The following instrumental intensities were recorded:

Intensity IV – General Santos City in South Cotabato, Kiamba in Sarangani

Intensity III – San Francisco in Southern Leyte; Abuyog in Leyte, Kidapawan in Cotabato; Hinunangan in Southern Leyte

Intensity II – Saint Bernard in Southern Leyte; Dulag in Leyte; Surigao City in Surigao del Norte; Palo in Leyte

Intensity I – Alangalang and Carigara in Leyte

Phivolcs said damage and aftershocks are expected.

Local government units in Davao Oriental are still assessing the earthquake’s impact on communities.
