50 alleged NPA rebels, sympathizers surrender in Masbate

LEGAZPI CITY––At least 50 alleged members and sympathizers of the communist New People’s Army (NPA) surrendered on Tuesday to the government in Masbate province, the police said Wednesday.

Major Maria Luisa Calubaquib, Bicol police spokesperson, said five of the surrenderers were NPA members, one from Kilusang Rebulosyonaryo sa Barangay, 10 from the Sangay ng Partido sa Lokalidad, and 34 from Militia ng Bayan.

The surrenderers, who took the oath of allegiance to the government in a hotel in Masbate City, would receive financial and livelihood assistance through the Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program.

Calubaquib said the military and the police strengthened their operations to convince the rebels to surrender and return to the fold of the law.
