Vigan City reverts to MECQ to curb increase of COVID-19 cases

LAOAG CITY — Ilocos Sur’s capital city of Vigan has reverted to a two-week modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ) from August 9-23 to curb the rise of COVID-19 cases.
Ilocos Sur Gov. Ryan Luis Singson ordered the imposition of the second strictest containment classification in the city through an executive order.
The city was also placed under the same quarantine classification from May 22 to June 19.
Vigan City Mayor Juan Carlo Medina said placing the city under MECQ was necessary due to a spike in the number of cases since last week.
“A scaling up of community quarantine classification is imperative at this point to control this surge and if only to ensure that our health care system, though overwhelmed, is functioning and fully operational,” said Medina in a statement
As of August 8, Vigan has logged a total of 823 confirmed cases, including 151 active infections, 654 recoveries, and 18 deaths. INQ
