PH Air Force honors bronze boxing medalist Marcial with promotion

MANILA, Philippines—The Philippine Air Force has promoted boxer Eumir Marcial from airman first class to sergeant after his bronze win in boxing at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Air Force chief Lt. Gen. Allen Paredes and Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea pinned Marcial’s sergeant chevrons after the athlete’s arrival at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport on Monday (Aug. 9).

Zamboanga native Marcial is an active enlisted man since 2013 and currently belongs to the PAF Civil Military Operations Group.

He is the second military person to bag an Olympic medal in the Tokyo Olympics, after gold medalist PAF Staff Sergeant Hidilyn Diaz.

Marcial brought home the bronze medal for men’s middleweight semifinals last Aug. 5, after losing a close fight against Ukraine’s Oleksandr Khyzhniak. The Philippine team brought home four medals—gold from Diaz in weightlifting, silver from boxers Nesthy Petecio and Carlos Paalam and bronze from Marcial.
