Radio station boss in fistfight ; man shot in Toledo City quarrel

A son of a barangay captain was shot and wounded during a fistfight with a radio station manager in barangay Luray II, Toledo City, southwest Cebu.

Alvin Gerongco, 38, was wounded in the right thigh.

A father and his two sons were arrested in connection with the shooting, but they denied any part in the violence.

Police said Gerengco, son of Sangi barangay captain Victor Gerongco, went to the barangay hall for a hearing around 10 a.m. last Wednesday.

While waiting outside, Alvin was called by Reher Ybañez, manager of radio station dyRX based in Toledo.

The two had a heated argument and ended up in a fistfight.

Police said they didn’t know what the quarrel was about.

While the two were trading blows, six men arrived in a blue multicab.

One of them shot Alvin.

Alvin fired back but missed.

The six men then fled, leaving behind the vehicle with plate number YHJ-623.

Police said that according to witnesses, the six men were companions of the station manager.

A multicab owned by the barangay, a tricycle and the barangay hall sustained bullet holes during the melee.

Gerongco was brought by his driver to the South General Hospital in Naga City for treatment.

About 15 minutes after the shooting, police arrested three suspects.

Attempted murder charges were filed against Edgardo Ciocon Sr., 47; and his sons, Edgardo, 19, and a 16-year-old boy.

SPO3 Revelito S. Tadique, investigator of the Toledo City police, said witnesses identified the father and sons among the attackers.

Police recovered two empty shells of a .45 pistol and four empty shells of a 9mm pistol at the crime scene.

Elsewhere in San Fernando town, southern Cebu, a 73-year-old man was shot and wounded as he was about to open his store.

Serafin Zurita was shot in the leg about 5 a.m. by an assailant who hid behind the house fence.

The shooter remains unidentified.

Zurita was brought to the hospital by his wife.
