Extend voter registration, Comelec urged

MANILA, Philippines — Sen. Francis Pangilinan on Monday called on the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to rethink its earlier decision and agree to extend the period for voter registration.

With just 52 days left, the Comelec will have lost the opportunity to enlist more voters due to the two-week lockdown in Metro Manila, Pangilinan said.

He issued the call after the Comelec said that the commission en banc had not discussed the possibility of extending the voter’s registration period.

“We are in an extraordinary time. One- or two-week extension would mean more people can register to vote,” he said.

As of June, the Comelec said their 4 million projected new voters for 2022 had already been reached and exceeded, with a total of 60 million registered voters, Pangilinan said.
