DOJ chief eyes NBI help vs online scammer

MANILA, Philippines — Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra is eyeing to tap the help of the National Bureau of Investigation in running after those behind the fictitious email claiming to be from his office asking for financial assistance for terminally ill patients.

“The DOJ Office of Cybercrime (DOJ-OOC) is on it. If necessary, I’ll seek help from the NBI,” Guevarra told reporters.

The DOJ-OOC earlier said that an online scammer posing as the justice secretary used the email address [email protected] to ask for money supposedly to buy “iTunes gift cards” for patients of hospice care centers.

Guevarra’s office only uses [email protected] and [email protected] as its official email addresses.
