Malampaya Energy ramps up exploration and production

The Malampaya Deep Water Gas-to-Power Project is located 50 kilometers offshore Northwest Palawan. It is the only producing natural gas asset in the Philippines.

MANILA, Philippines — The Malampaya Energy Group has vowed to optimize its facilities to supply power plants as it announced that it will ramp up investment in exploration and production enhancement technologies of the Malampaya gas field.

According to Malampaya Energy executive, Belinda Racela, the group will start to focus on rejuvenation strategies that have successfully increased production and extended the life of other mature fields in the region and globally where oil majors have divested operatorship.

“There is a brilliant, highly motivated, and experienced team in place at Malampaya that can make this happen when we support them with the right, highly specialized technical experts and contractors,” she said.

“This growth program will mean fewer brown-outs and a continuation of safe, reliable, and sustainable supply from Malampaya for decades to come,” she added.

Racela said that at the core of Malamapaya’s program is the planned drilling campaign in the SC38 license area to add reserves and extend the life of the asset.

At the same time, Malampaya Energy will evaluate well and production enhancement technologies to improve recovery from the main Malampaya field in the near term.

“There is a range of innovative new production enhancement tools and techniques that have emerged in recent years that have never been applied at Malampaya,” Racela said.

“We now have a window of opportunity to increase production while simultaneously exploring for new resources in the SC38 license area. There is potential to breathe new life into the Malampaya field if we act quickly and decisively,” she added.

The Malampaya Energy Group is a Filipino-owned upstream (petroleum industry) energy company. It operates the Malampaya Deepwater to Gas Project, the only producing natural gas asset in the Philippines which currently delivers a fifth of the nation’s electricity needs.
