MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Justice (DOJ) warned the public on Saturday of a fake email address that claims it is owned by Secretary Menardo Guevarra.
“It has come to the attention of the Department of Justice (DOJ) – Office of Cybercrime (OOC) that a certain email address namely, osecmig1@gmail.com, is being utilized by an unknown subject representing himself as Justice Secretary Menardo I. Guevarra,” stated in a public advisory signed by DOJ Office of Cybercrime Officer-in-Charge Charito Zamora.
According to the DOJ, the suspect is using the email address to request assistance in an alleged procurement.
“The said email address was used to send messages to a number of recipients requesting assistance in the alleged procurement of iTunes gift cards as donations to patients at hospice care units across the Philippines, subject to reimbursement,” the advisory read.
The DOJ stressed that Guevarra’s only email is osecmig@gmail.com.
The agency advised the public of the actions to be undertaken when the said email is received: look out for a warning message from the email provider, report the message as phishing, block the sender, report the message as spam, and report the incident to the email provider.
