MANILA, Philippines — The intensive care unit (ICU) for COVID-19 patients of the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) has reached full capacity, hospital spokesperson Dr. Jonas del Rosario said on Saturday.

“Katatanong ko lang din ngayong umaga, ‘yung ICU po ng COVID sa amin sa PGH ay puno ‘no. Wala pong vacancy,” del Rosario said in an interview on DZMM – TeleRadyo.

(I just asked this morning, the ICU for COVID-19 patients is full. There is no vacancy.)

Hence, del Rosario said the hospital has to convert other areas into an ICU setup due to the lack of ICU beds.

PGH’s ICU for COVID-19 patients has 20 beds, while around 40 ICU beds for adults and eight for children in the other wards del Rosario said.

He said that because PGH is a COVID-19 referral hospital, the number of ICU beds is inadequate.

Currently, PGH has 169 COVID-19 patients, and a “steady” increase in admissions was observed, said del Rosario.

PGH has a 225-bed capacity for COVID-19 patients.

“Steady po ang pag-increase ng aming mga admissions. In fact, kagabi po ay naitala na 169 COVID patients na po ang naka-admit sa aming facility — sa aming COVID ward, sa both sa pay at sa charity,” del Rosario bared.

(The increase in our admissions is steady. In fact, last night, we recorded 169 COVID patients admitted in our facility.)

Del Rosario said that the number of admitted COVID-19 patients is the most in the last two months.

The eight-bed COVID ward for children likewise peaked in the last two weeks.

Del Rosario also noted that some cases of children with COVID-19 were complicated due to underlying diseases.
