MANILA, Philippines — The intensive care unit (ICU) for COVID-19 patients of the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) has reached full capacity, hospital spokesperson Dr. Jonas del Rosario said on Saturday.

“Katatanong ko lang din ngayong umaga, ‘yung ICU po ng COVID sa amin sa PGH ay puno ‘no. Wala pong vacancy,” del Rosario said in an interview on DZMM – TeleRadyo.

Hence, del Rosario said the hospital has to convert other areas into an ICU setup due to the lack of ICU beds.

PGH’s ICU for COVID-19 patients has 20 beds, while around 40 ICU beds for adults and eight for children in the other wards del Rosario said.

He said that because PGH is a COVID-19 referral hospital, the number of ICU beds is inadequate.

The eight-bed COVID ward for children likewise peaked in the last two weeks.

Del Rosario also noted that some cases of children with COVID-19 were complicated due to underlying diseases.
