Delta variant detected in Bulacan

CITY OF MALOLOS, Bulacan—The province of Bulacan has detected three more cases of the more transmissible Delta variant of COVID-19, authorities said on Friday, Aug. 6.

Dr. Hjordis Marushka Celis, Bulacan COVID-19 task force vice-chair, said the three latest Delta cases are not among the 23 close contacts of the first three Bulacan patients infected with the variant, also known as B.1.617.2 that originated from India.

Gov. Daniel Fernando said he might recommend to the national Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases that Bulacan be placed under modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ) or enhanced community quarantine (ECQ). MECQ and ECQ are the most restrictive quarantine classifications in the country.

“If our COVID-19 cases would continue to shoot up, then we would need a more tightened control of movement and activities to prevent further virus spread, particularly this Delta variant,” Fernando told Inquirer in an interview Friday.

Data showed that Bulacan now has 2,291 active COVID-19 cases compared to the 600 recorded a week ago.
