MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) will investigate the killing of Cindy Jones Torres, a transgender woman who was found dead last Wednesday due to multiple stabs in Guiginto, Bulacan.

“Through our Regional Office covering Central Luzon, the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) will be conducting a motu proprio investigation into the killing of transgender woman, Cindy Jones Torres, 39, who was said to have been stabbed multiple times in Guiguinto, Bulacan by a man who was allegedly borrowing money,” CHR spokesperson Jacqueline Ann de Guia said.

“The case of Cindy Jones, as well as other similar instances of reprehensible and senseless acts of violence, stresses the harsh realities faced by the LGBTQI (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and intersex) community, who are more vulnerable to hate-motivated violence even in present-day society,” de Guia said.

The commission also condemned all forms of gender-based violence and called for the enactment of the Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, and Expression (SOGIE) Equality Bill to better protect members of the LGBTQI community.

The group also expects the police to ensure that justice will be served and that the suspect would be held accountable. The CHR likewise hoped for a speedy resolution of the case.
