MANILA, Philippines — The country’s total number of deaths due to COVID-19 complications rose to 28,231 on Wednesday as the Department of Health (DOH) reports 90 more fatalities.
The deaths compose 1.74 percent of all the 1,619,824 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the country, of which 63,171 remain active.
Of the active cases, 2 percent are severe and 1.2 percent are critical that are at higher risk for death. Meanwhile, 94.1 percent are mild, 1.3 percent are asymptomatic, and 1.42 percent are moderate cases.
Dr. Alethea De Guzman, OIC-Director of the DOH Epidemiology Bureau noted that COVID-19 deaths are declining at the national level.
She said that in April this year when the country saw a surge in infections, an average of 133 patients died per day. This decreased to 117 deaths per day in May, 95 in June, and 61 in July.
Metro Manila will be placed under enhanced community quarantine, the strictest lockdown, from August 6 to 20 in order to prevent the further spread of the highly contagious Delta variant, and eventually prevent more deaths due to more cases.
