MANILA, Philippines — More than 24,000 fully vaccinated senior citizens in Makati have received P1,000 worth of gift certificates, an incentive put in place to encourage the vulnerable sector to get their COVID-19 shots, the local government said on Tuesday.

Makati City Mayor Abby Binay said there is an increase in the number of senior citizens who got their vaccines when the city began distributing the incentive in July.

“This past month, there has been an uptick in the number of senior citizens that registered for COVID-19 vaccination under the A2 category,” Binay said in a statement.

To date, a total of 24,352 out of 35,813 fully vaccinated senior citizens received the reward, according to Binay.

There are 50,000 registered senior citizens in Makati. Of these, 44,121 received the first dose of the vaccine, while 35,813 received the second dose, according to the local chief executive.

“Ideally, we should achieve a 100 percent vaccination rate among the elderly,” she noted. “However, it would still depend on their willingness to get vaccinated and on the availability of vaccines.”
