MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Interior and Local Government on Tuesday condemned the attack allegedly perpetrated by communist rebels on health workers and policemen in Palo, Leyte last week.

Calbayog City Health Office staff escorted by cops from Calbayog City Police Station were supposed to pick up COVID-19 vaccines when they were ambushed allegedly by members of the New People’s Army last July 27.

Police reports said the team heard a burst of gunfire and a loud explosion from an improvised explosive device 20 meters behind their convoy while traversing the Maharlika Highway, Barangay Lale, Pinabacdao, Samar.

“The CPP-NPA-NDF’s height of insensitivity, callousness, and opportunism knows no bounds,” Interior Secretary Eduardo Año said in a statement.

The rebels fled after the cops tried to engage them. There were no casualties from the incident.
