‘Depressed’ dad stabs baby to death

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Philippines—A three-month-old infant was stabbed to death Wednesday night by her own father, who later claimed to have been suffering from depression over his joblessness, the authorities said.

Victoriano Delagon of Barangay Puntod here surrendered to police authorities after rushing Scarlet, the youngest of his four children, to the hospital.

Scarlet succumbed to her wounds a few hours later.

Delagon, who appeared remorseful inside the Maharlika Detention Center here, said he was not aware of what he did.

He said that hours before the incident, he and his brother-in-law bought a small bottle of rum and drank it.

Delagon said he went to sleep then found himself rushing his youngest child to the hospital due to stab wounds.

“I don’t know why I did it,” he said when told that he had stabbed his daughter with an imitation katana or Japanese sword.

Cristine, Delagon’s wife, said she wants her husband jailed and to face the consequences of what he did to their child.
