MANILA, Philippines — A rainy and cloudy Friday is expected anew in parts of Luzon on Friday due to the southwest monsoon or “habagat,” the state weather bureau said.
Heavy rains may trigger floods and landslides particularly in western Luzon (Ilocos region, Benguet, Abra, Zambales, Bataan, Tarlac, Pampanga, and Occidental Mindoro) Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) weather specialist Shelly Ignacio said.
“Asahan pa rin natin na may makulimlim na kalangitan o may pag ulan dito sa Luzon dahil sa southwest monsoon,” she said in Pagasa’s daily weather forecast.
(We can expect expect gloomy weather with rains here in Luzon due to the southwest monsoon.)
“Ang monsoon rains o pag-ulan na mga malalakas na may posibilidad na magkaroon ng pagbaha o pagguho ng lupa dahil sa malawakang pag ulan dahil sa habagat dito naka-concentrate sa western Luzon,” she added.
(Monsoon rains, which can cause floods and landslides, are concentrated over western Luzon.)
The “habagat” will likewise bring occasional rains over Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon.
Meanwhile, Visayas and Mindanao will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms still due to the southwest monsoon, Ignacio said.
Gale warnings are raised over the northern and western seaboards of Luzon, since it is risky for seafarers to venture out to sea, she added.
Luzon and Visayas are expected to have moderate to strong winds in the southwest direction, coupled with moderate to strong coastal waters.
Meanwhile, Mindanao will experience light to moderate winds in the southwest direction and slight to moderate sea conditions, Pagasa said.
“Pinapayuhang mag-ingat at bawal pumalaot ‘yung maliliit na sasakyang pandagat dahil mayroon tayong maalon sa napakaalong mga baybayin,” Ignacio said.
(Operators and crew of small vessels are advised not to venture out to sea.)
