TUGUEGARAO CITY — At least 38 new cases of COVID-19 were recorded in this city on Tuesday (July 27), raising to 335 its active infections, records from the city health office showed.

The city remains on a general community quarantine (GCQ) with heightened restrictions until July 31. GCQ is the second least restrictive quarantine classification in the country.

Mayor Jefferson Soriano has ordered the strict implementation of health protocols as a precaution against the more transmissible Delta variant of COVID-19.

“We have to be stricter as the Delta variant is already in the country. There is no need to be complacent,” Soriano told the Inquirer in a phone interview on Wednesday.

He has tapped the citizen group “Neighborhood Watch” to be on the lookout for violators following reports that restaurants and stores selling pancit were drawing a throng of customers.

To date, the city has recorded 7, 980 COVID-19 cases but 7,505 of them had already recovered from the viral disease. Its death toll stood at 140.
