CITY OF CALAPAN — Police confiscated P18,000 worth of illegal logs on Tuesday morning in Bulalacao town in Oriental Mindoro province, according to a report from Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon and Palawan (Mimaropa) police office.
Report said police went to Barangay Maujao at about 9:30 a.m. to check on the reported presence of illegally sawn lumber from kupang (Parkia timoriana) tree, a native hardwood species.
After monitoring, they caught sight of suspect Romel Mesinan, 41, who was arranging the said lumber. But when the suspect noticed the police, he ran away and escaped.
Recovered from the area were 15 pieces of illegally sawn lumber in different dimensions, with an estimated scale of 600 board feet and worth P18,000.
Police have taken the confiscated lumber under its custody for proper disposition, said the report.
Charges will be filed against the suspect for violation of Presidential Decree 705, or the Revised Forestry Code of the Philippines as amended under the RA 7161, which prohibits the cutting of trees without a permit from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
