MANILA, Philippines—State-funded research has developed a faster and cheaper method of diagnosing dengue.
The Department of Science and Technology (DoST) said biotechnology and molecular biology experts from the University of the Philippines have developed a rapid test kit that could diagnose dengue in one hour and at a more affordable price.
Called Biotek-M, the technology would “translate to better delivery of healthcare to patients” as doctors would be able to quickly detect patients confirmed to have dengue, said project leader Dr. Raul Destura.
“Institutional units or hospitals would not have to admit every patient suspected of dengue,” DoST said in a statement.
“This would translate to better delivery of health care to the patients because the hospital would have less admissions and therefore more time for staff to attend to patients, and more hospital resources available for patients who need them the most,” it added.
Destura said Biotek-M works by adding nucleic acid to a blood sample. Blood that is infected with dengue turns green while blood that is clear of dengue turns orange.
The test is “as accurate” but more affordable than the usual dengue diagnostic test called Polymerase Chain Reaction technology that could cost P7,000 to P8,000.
Biotek-M is currently being tested at the Rizal Medical Center, the National Children’s Hospital and the Philippine Children’s Medical Center. Destura said initial test results “are promising.”—Tarra Quismundo
