Marikina River update: 2nd alarm raised, evacuation underway

MANILA, Philippines — The Marikina River’s water level has surpassed 16 meters, prompting local authorities to raise its status to second alarm.

The river’s water level was at 16.3 meters as of 8 a.m. on Saturday, the Marikina Public Information Office said.

The first alarm was raised past midnight after the river breached the 15 – meter mark.

Marikina City authorities have since started to evacuate residents living in areas that are high-risk of flooding.

The third alarm would be raised at the Marikina River should its water level breaches 18 meters.

Rain continues to drench Metro Manila and other parts of Luzon as Typhoon Fabian still enhanced the southwest monsoon even after exiting the Philippines area of responsibility Friday night.
