LAOAG CITY—This capital city of Ilocos Norte is having a “major surge” in COVID-19 cases, the OCTA Research group said.

In its latest monitoring report released Friday (July 23), OCTA Research said this city is experiencing a high growth rate of 82 percent from July 16 to 22.

It was the only area in the Ilocos region that was flagged by the group in its report, noting that the average daily cases in the city have almost doubled to 69 from 38 within a week.

The group also noted a “very high infection rate” in the city at 2.14 percent, which is more than double the national average of 1.06 percent.

Among all the areas which were flagged in the report, the group noted a “very high” average attack rate (ADAR) of 59.70 cases per 100,000 population, which is nine times higher than the ADAR recorded in Manila at 6.55

Laoag City accounts for 48 percent of the 1,662 active COVID-19 cases in Ilocos Norte, according to the data from the provincial government.
