DOH clarifies: Delta variant case in Taguig not a local case

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Health (DOH) clarified on Monday that the COVID-19 Delta variant case in Taguig City was not a local case.

“ROF (returning overseas Filipino) ‘yung sa Taguig, not a local case,” Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said in a text message to INQUIRER.net.

Vergeire made the clarification after Taguig Safe City Task Force head Clarence Santos said on Sunday that one of the city’s 73 detected variants was found to be a case of the Delta variant, citing a report from its City Epidemiology and Disease Surveillance Unit.

The country has so far confirmed a total of 35 cases of the Delta variant, including the latest 16 new cases announced by the DOH last Friday. Of the 16 cases, five are from ROFs and 11 were detected locally.

Vergeire said the 11 cases are composed of two in Antique, five in Cagayan de Oro, one in Misamis Oriental, and three in the City of Manila.
