LAOAG CITY—The Ilocos Norte government said Friday that a 4-day-old baby had succumbed to COVID-19, the youngest fatality recorded in the province since the pandemic began in March 2020.

The baby, who was from this city, tested positive for the disease on July 14, three days after being born. His exposure was undetermined.

The infant’s death came when record-high COVID-19 cases were logged in Ilocos Norte on Thursday, with 162 new infections added to its tally in a single day. The number of active cases in the province climbed to 1,249.

Three other fatalities were also recorded in the province on Thursday, with 31 new recoveries.

Data show that Laoag and Batac cities continue to have the highest number of active COVID-19 cases, with 506 and 122, respectively. INQ
