MANILA, Philippines — Marikina City needs to fully vaccinate at least 35,000 residents to acquire herd immunity, Mayor Marcelino Teodoro said on Monday.
Teodoro said that the city has inoculated at least 85 percent of the estimated 225,000 eligible residents as target for herd immunity.
Of this number, around 185,000 to 190,000 residents have been vaccinated as of July 12. This means the city only needs to inoculate 30,000 to 35,000 people to reach its target population, according to Teodoro.
“Nasa 85 percent na kami nung target naming herd immunity. Siguro mga 30,000 to 35,000 na lang. 10,000 per day kami,” Teodoro said in an interview on ABS-CBN’s Teleradyo.

“Sayang. Within one week sana. Yung momentum na yun, within one week sana matatapos na namin yung target na herd immunity pero ganon talaga eh, hindi talaga stable from the global supply chain,” he added.
(It could have been within one week. With that momentum, within one week, we could have completed our target herd immunity if not for the global supply chain which is not stable.)
With the Marikina City Mega Vaccination Facility, the city is capable of inoculating 7,000 to 10,000 residents daily.
According to Teodoro, of the 24,000 AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine doses that arrived on Saturday, only 4,000 can be used for first doses while 20,000 are reserved for second doses.
The country has so far administered a total of 13,169,282 COVID-19 vaccines, with 3,526,342 fully vaccinated individuals as of July 11. Faith Yuen Wei Ragasa, Inquirer trainee
