MANILA, Philippines — A member of the Marine Corps and hero in the 2017 Marawi siege has been posthumously awarded the Medal of Valor.

The Marine Corps announced on Saturday the award bestowed to one of its own, the late Private First Class Gener Tinangag of Mountain Province.

Tinangag, an assistant rifleman of the Marine battalion landing team-5 special operations platoon, was given recognition for extricating wounded and dead troops on June 9, 2017, under heavy fire from enemy guns and rocket-propelled grenades and rescuing four Marines trapped inside a mosque.

The Medal of Valor is the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ highest military honor.
