Flags in Bacolod lowered to half-staff to honor deceased councilor

BACOLOD CITY—All Philippine flags in this city will be lowered at half-staff on July 8 to honor a councilor who died on June 25.

Mayor Evelio Leonardia said the city is mourning the death of Councilor Elmer Tan Sy, who tested positive for COVID-19 and had a heart attack at the Bacolod Adventist Medical Center on June 25.

Sy, 66, was a kidney patient undergoing dialysis twice a week and planning to have a kidney transplant, his daughter Psyche said.

She said their family would like to express their gratitude to all who condoled with them on the passing away of her father.

Sy’s formal wake at the Acropolis Chapels in Barangay Bata, Bacolod City will start Monday, July 5, until Wednesday, July 7.

Interment will be at Greenhills Memorial Park, Bacolod City at 8 a.m. Thursday, July 8.

Leonardia, in Executive Order No. 36, Series of 2021, said Sy was an incumbent Sangguniang Panlungsod member and a significant political figure in Bacolod City, famously known for his tagline, “less talk, more action.”

Sy was president of the Philippine Councilor’s League – Bacolod City Chapter for three consecutive terms, Leonardia said.

“Bacolod lost a dedicated legislator with a kind and generous heart, a public servant who shall be forever remembered for his selfless leadership and humility”, the mayor added.
